All planes need to be painted in green with white stripes

Seeing this paint job on the A-10 reminds me of one of the questions from my youth about what would happen if you took an A-10 and threw it back in time to WW2 and made it do fighter duties. Obviously if it managed to walk it’s 30mm into any other plane it would rip it from the sky, but would it be able to get in behind the prop fighters of WW2?

Fun fact, Haapsalu airfield, where they were performing those landings is an abandoned former Soviet base. Open to anyone and often used for car events like drifting and even some drag races.

Might take my upcoming Hyundai i30 N to one of those hangars for the sound :P.

This is blatant provocation of Russia, or so I am told

Yes, yes it could. A larger turn radius, but it would hardly matter - the A-10 can focus on boom and zoom tactics.

Hopefully this exercise was commemorated with a T-Shirt saying “I got Estoned” with an anthropomorphic A-10 where the GAU-8 looks like a smoking joint.
Because that would be so AF.
/ that would be AF AF?

The thing is though the A-10's max speed is actually 1mph slower than a P-51D. It can’t just run and gun. They have similar max altitudes, although the A-10 has a better climb rate. I think the biggest issue for a WW2 fighter would be finding somewhere to hit the A-10 where a .50 cal would do meaningful damage. I think one of the biggest issues for the A-10 would be too high a firing rate. They’d want to dial back the RPM of the GAU-8 quite a bit to increase the amount of time it can fire for.

I think all of our CAS planes should be painted in that D-Day livery...

I love these hypotheticals. My guess is that the increased SI from the A-10 would mean the prop plane would have a hard time sneaking in, plus the climb rate is so much better on the A-10 it could just rip up and around. Its an interesting question. I think about these all the time. My current favorite would be taking a modern Toyota back to 50's usa. marvel at the technology or curse its japaneseness?

I always wonder what it would be like to magically appear in the ‘70's at a drag strip with an e46 M3 or a F80 M3 and blow the doors off nearly all the big iron muscle cars. Or a Tesla and crush all of them. Hell you could show up in my ZHP and beat a good number of them. The idea of blowing off muscle cars with 400+ci engines in my ZHP with a paltry 183ci is deeply amusing to me.

yeah - are we sure an A-10 can’t out turn most WWII fighters?

We’ll stop when they give back Crimea and hold free elections.

The more interesting question is how fast could the Allies have defeated Germany in Europe with a couple of squadrons of these beasts? The break out from the Normandy beaches and the march through France would have been faster. The Battle of the Bulge would have been possibly avoided or shortened.

Many years ago I was gifted a CD of Aircraft Records’ Supersonics which features stereo audio recordings of A-10s and SR-71s. I like to play the A-10 maneuvering quite loud. It makes people look at the ceiling and duck their heads involuntarily, lol.
Give this a listen. Be brave and turn it up or put on your headphones.

They mostly have warbird recordings, which is very okay as well.
